Electronic Return Filing through Bivio
Ed,

You better hope that the priority envelope doesn't get lost on its way to the IRS because that is not an IRS-recognized proof of mailing. 26 USC 7502(c) sets out the law. and 26 CFR 301.7502-1 sets out the regulations. Any legible postmark is accepted as proof of timely filing as long as the package arrives at the IRS within a typical timeframe. If the package is delayed too long, the IRS can demand that the sender prove that it was mailed timely and not mailed at a later date. If it never arrives, only certified and registered mail (and certain levels of private delivery services) are acceptable as proof of timely mailing.

It may not seem logical or reasonable, but that's the law.

FYI. I normally send tax returns by certified mail from the post office without requesting a receipt.
This year, I was told the priority mail receipt was just as good proof.
Priority mail is often the best way to send things, but I was told it would still take 3 days to get to downtown Chicago from my Philadelphia suburb.

Ours was 422 pages....we UPS'ed it....if you go to the instruction portion on the 1065 form page, it gives you the address where to send it and with the tracking # it's just like return receipt

Can someone suggest a secure method and location (public place) to print the information because the state and federal returns total over 200 pages? Thanks for your input.

Office max and Staples and full service FedEx offices have print services - you can upload and go pick up - BE SURE to choose the pickup option - NOT the delivery option - they will mail it to you and charge a lot more.

I considered the upload option. Would people freak out that their SS# 's are on it and it sits on a shelf until I can get there.
Nevermind...perhaps my own convenience trumps their paranoia.

Give up the treasurer job and have one of the people that freak out take over the job.

Have them store it behind the counter until you get there - it's an option at office max - you don't have to have it out in front there - I'm not sure about the other places - you can call and ask - I use office max
