Field Trips Good morning everyone, I got a question today about field trip ideas for an investment club. I'm curious whether any of your clubs have gone on a field trip? If so, where did you go and what did you do? Doing something a little bit different every now and then is fun. Thanks in advance. -- Laurie Frederiksen Invest with your friends! www.bivio.com Become our Facebook friend! www.facebook.com/bivio Follow us on twitter! www.twitter.com/bivio My investment club in Dallas went to the Southwest Airlines annual meeting. If you have a company that has it’s annual meeting in your area (especially if you happen to own the stock as we did), it is always interesting to attend the annual meeting. We also attended some education classes that NAIC sponsored in our area. I think this helps get the members more interested in the stocks. Henri Good morning everyone, Thanks Henri. Going to an Annual Shareholders meeting is a great idea. Has anybody else ever gone to one? -- Laurie Frederiksen Invest with your friends! www.bivio.com Become our Facebook friend! www.facebook.com/bivio Follow us on twitter! www.twitter.com/bivio Laurie, Our club is in Illinois....Chicago has the Chicago Board of Trade and the Mercantile Exchange. Those would be great places for a club day trip. Pam (makingmoney61874) On Thu, Jun 9, 2011 at 11:39 AM, Laurie Frederiksen <laurie@bivio.biz> wrote: Thanks Henri. Going to an Annual Shareholders meeting is a great idea. I’ve been to many and they have a wide range of styles. In the 1990’s, AT&T held their annual meeting in different cities every year. To ask a question, you went to a phone booth and called the chairman with your question. Quite different from today. Most annual meetings are short, not well attended and very attentive to the letter of the laws that require them rather than being informative to shareholders. Don’t get me wrong, you get access to the senior management of the firm and they are willing to answer questions. But don’t expect to hear lots of information that wasn’t already in the annual report, proxy or recent earnings release. It sounds like the Berkshire Hathaway annual meeting is a multi day party. -- Laurie Frederiksen Invest with your friends! www.bivio.com Become our Facebook friend! www.facebook.com/bivio Follow us on twitter! www.twitter.com/bivio I just attended ( today) the Annual Meeting of American
Capital Agency ( AGNC), which I own in my personal portfolio 401(k). The tax
issues preclude ownership by our investment club.
The meeting was in Bethesda - not a bad commute from my home
in Fairfax.
There were about as many shareholders as there were company
reps - 20 each or so. The questions were politely and completely addressed. I
came away with a feeling that AGNC was a well-run, if somewhat risky,
enterprise. The CEO, CFO and Chief Investment Manager gave generoisly of their
time and insight. Dividends remain at about 19% per annum and the stock is
trading at 30, a 52 week high, up from 25. The company began operations in April
2008 and the stock opened at about 20.
I will keep an eye out for more Annual Meetings that are
within commuting distance.
The coffee and other goodies were nicely done, to
boot!
Best regards,
Leo
