Quest for Positive Relative Returns Graphs
Good morning everyone,

I have updated all the Quest For Positive Relative Returns graphs through 1/1/2011 for clubs who requested them. You can find them through a link you will see on your club pages. If I have missed anyone or there are others who would like a graph, please let me know.

When you look at your graphs, it is interesting to think back about what was happening in your club during times where you see an uptrend or downtrend. For example, one of the reasons my club did very well during the downturn in 2008 is because it sometimes takes us a while to come to a decision. Because of that we happened to be holding a high percentage of cash when the market went down and our portfolio did not drop nearly as drastically as the market did.

Another club we looked at recently benefited because they had transferred appreciated stock to a withdrawing member, Stock which has done well for you sometimes has a lowered projected future return yet is difficult to let go of. We all like the stocks we have done well in. The withdrawal gave a reason for this club to let go of this stock which left them with a portfolio with a higher projected return when the market started to recover.

Don't forget that these graphs are showing relative returns. That means they are showing whether your investment in your club produced higher or lower rates of growth than you would have had if you had invested the same amounts at the same times in the Vanguard Index 500 fund. That is not an easy benchmark to beat. Any amount of positive relative return means your portfolio management methods are paying off. If you need improvement, at least pat yourselves on the back if you see an upward trend.

It is interesting to look at these as a group from a distance. My next project is to work on putting together some composite information so you will be able to to get some idea of how your club compares to other clubs.

Enjoy your bivio friends! If you have 4 or more yellow friends, you can earn green friends once we do a quick records verification on your account. Just email us at support@bivio.com to set this up. Green bivio friends come bearing gifts. For each one you earn, you will receive $30 bivio bucks toward your next subscription renewal!

I hope that these graphs will help you as you are making your portfolio management decisions. Don't forget that you are managing a portfolio, not just selecting stocks. Look at the projected return for your entire portfolio and let it tell you what stocks you should keep, replace or sell.

Enjoy!

Hi Scott,

Sorry about that. You're all set now. You'll find a link labeled Quest For Positive Relative Returns at the top of your club pages. This will take you to your graph.

It's a day for doing graphs for clubs that sound like they come from interesting places to visit. Your club is called Snake River and I did another one for a club from a place called Boiling Springs.

Thanks for joining. Good luck!

Hi Rhonda,

The plan is to update them once a month. There will be a one month time lag to give clubs time to update their records.

If you need the next data point before I can get to it, you can always determine it yourself using the Performance Benchmark report. The report shows 1 year periods beginning and ending on the first of each month. So, for example, I'll be running Feb. 1, 2010-Feb 1, 2011 next.
