Does
anybody listen to NPR radio? If so, you’re familiar with membership
drives. I’d like to have a Club Cafe membership drive. I’ve
made a commitment to keep sharing information about doing your accounting or
running your club on a regular basis and I’d like to make sure as many
people as possible who might be interested in the information know how to get
it.
I
also think we all benefit when the more brave members of the list share their
thoughts, questions and information about their club’s operations.
Our
membership drive doesn’t involve ceaseless interruptions to programming
and you can save your dollars to donate to NPR. Instead I’d like to
offer you something. On the day when we have added 100 new members to the
club cafe list, I’ll do a drawing for a free bivio subscription. The
only people who will be eligible to win are those on the list.
As
many people in your club as you’d like can join the list. Here’s
the instructions on how to join:

Hi Everyone,

Laurie, are you including 'existing members' in the drawing
for the free membership or do existing members have to
re-enroll to be eligible for the free membership?
If I understand your post correctly, the odds of winning the
free membership are 1 in a 100!

Hi Frank,
Don't worry, I support people making donations to whomever they'd like to. I'm
just interested in getting more
Club Cafe members.
:)
This does give me an interesting
thought though. I wonder whether "Red State" minded investment clubs invest in
different companies than
"Blue State" minded ones.
Perhaps we should do a poll.

Dear Bob,
Of course current members are included in the drawing! We support
our loyal club café fans, new and old. No need to re-register.
You still have pretty good odds. Especially if you get your whole club to sign up.

Laurie,
Incidentally, one of our clubs first discussions focused around what our limits were in terms of investing in companies that we saw as 'socially irresponsible'.
We decided that it would be a little nutty to only invest in clubs that had a socially responsible mission, however, we did unanimously agree that we would, under no circumstances, invest in companies that were socially or environmentally extremely irresponsible, no matter how good the return---our example being Chevron. We also agreed that we were interested in making green companies a portion of our portfolio.

Our club in Southern California has no restrictions on companies we won't invest in. Although, this situation has not come up after two years of being a club. I do know of a few of our members who will not invest in "sin" companies such as tobacco, porn and alcohol and I believe that the rest of the club would not have a problem with not investing in those. There are so many other companies to pick from why fight it.
