Understanding transactions
A new member in our club is setting up our portfolio in
Yahoo! She's going into bivio to look at the history of each
of our current holdings of 7 stocks. She's trying to
understand it, and I'm having trouble explaining particulars
to her. Here in case;
we bought 30 shares of Cisco 11/20/2000 at about $50,
we bought 54 more shares CSCO on 03/16/2001
we sold the first lot of 30 shares on 12/09/07 at a loss
I've included the transactions below; Could you write a few
sentences explaining this:
1. it says LTCG long term capital gain, but it was a loss?
2. Why is the sell, commission 45.02?
3. How do the numbers add up?

12/09/2001 sell, lot cost basis (30.0000)
(1,524.38)
                    sell, LTCG (985.00)
                   sell, commission
                   (45.02)
03/16/2001 buy 54.0000 1,049.63
                   commission 15.00
11/20/2000 buy 30.0000 1,509.38
                commission 15.00

sorry to feel stupid after all these years.
thanks in advance, Etana, The Stockettes
Mornin Etana! Don't feel stupid.  When you don't work with the books on a regular basis, it's so easy to forget.  They say it's like riding a bike.  Whoever they are, they're wrong! <G>

Your captital gain is in parenthesis, Etana.  That's a negative return of $985 (or capital loss).  And at $15/trade, it looks like you missed one.  Two purchases and one sale equals $45, with a 2c adjustment of some kind. Double check that.  Otherwise, your numbers make sense to me.

Hi Etana,
1. You have a negative LTCG (it is shown in parenthesis, that means it is
negative). A negative gain is a loss.

2. I'm not sure why your sell commission was $45.02. You'd have to look at
your brokerage records if you think that's a mistake.

3. Your basis in the stock you sold was the original purchase price plus
the purchase commission, $1509.38+$15=$1524.38
You sold the stock for $19.48 per share. $19.48*30=$584.40
If you add in the commission entered of $45.02, you netted $539.38 from
the sale.

    $1524.38-$539.38=$985 (Your loss)

Hope this helps
