Club interested in an ADR. What are the implications? Our club is considering the purchase of Satyam Computer Services (SAY). One issue that came up in the discussion was what effect will owning an ADR have on accounting? My guess is that we will have to enter dividends differently to acount for foreign withholding but nothing else. What are others' experience in this area? And, does anyone have an opinion on SAY? Thanks, Jeff Jeff, you are correct, dividends will require two entries. One for the part of the dividend received by your broker entered as any other cash or reinvested dividend, then a second entry on the Foreign Tax screen for the amount of tax that was withheld from the total dividend paid by the company. At the end of the year these two entries account for the entire dividend paid by the company. The software takes care of it handily. Gene Rooks, Space Coast Chapter |
