Verizon Spin Off
We received 2 shares of Fairmont Communications(FRP) for our
150 shares of Verizon dated 4/4/08. When I check the
brokerage account, it is listed as 10/17/07 for 1.3333
shares @ $14.75 = $ 19.96 and 2/20/08 for .6667 shares @
$11.219 = $7.48. (These dates are the dates of 2 lots of
shares of Verizon we purchased, 100 on 10/17/07 and 50 on
2/20/08.) I do not understand how to enter this info into
Bivio. When I fill out the form DO I enter 2 shares on the
5th and then hit calculate OR DO I enter 1.3333 for the
10/17/07 purchase and hit calculate. The actual cost basis
should be $19.66 for this transaction according to the
brokerage account but when I follow Bivio I do not get these
numbers. So I just deleted the entry. So can someone help
me. It is not very clear how to enter this info into Bivio.

Patsy,

My impression is that, if you are using AccountSync, bivio will make the necessary entries for you on the spin-off. You can do it yourself. Instructions can be found at http://www.bivio.com/hp/investment-transactions.html. You will need the Remaining Basis percentage, which is 99.5370%. The other thing to watch is that you include fractional shares when you enter the shares of Fairmont received. By my calculations, you should have received 2.828881 shares of Fairmont for your 150 shares of Verizon.

Thanks Rip,
We use Smith Barney as our broker so it does not
automatically download. They said 2 shares on those dates
10/17/07 and 2/20/08. I have tried several times to enter
the data but the numbers in Bivio do not match the numbers
at SB. I followed the instructions on Bivio but for me they
are as clear as mud. SB does not show any fractional
shares. I may have to have someone from Bivio walk me
through it.

the data but the numbers in Bivio do not match the numbers

are as clear as mud. Which date do I use...4/5/08 for 2
shares OR 10/17/07 for 1.3333shares(this is not clear) and
then 2/20/08 for .6667 shares. SB does not show any
fractional shares. I may have to have someone from Bivio
walk me through it.

Patsy,

Maybe it hasn't even happened yet, but you will be getting cash in lieu of fractional shares on this transaction. I would wait until you do.

Thanks, I will wait untill I get a printed statement at the
end of the month. That should be long enough.

We also use Smith Barney and AccountSync but can't use the
download service. It's frustrating to pay for the service
and still have to do the data entry manually. Smith Barney
is also charging us annual account fees because we aren't
generating a certain amount of revenue for them. We are
thinking of switching to someone else.
