Careful at the Post Office
Well, just a word of caution. I was leaving the post office
and got to the door after mailing our club taxes, realized I
just had a cash register receipt and not the green and white
certified mail receipt. So I went back up to the counter
and asked. She hadn't done that or the return receipt which
were sitting there beside her. So she apologized and took
care of it. But what if neither of us had realized it and
there had been a problem. Sigh.....

If you sent your taxes via certified mail (on thin paper that is green and white in color) that is as good as the "return receipt" (the thick paper stock that is green and perforated card that gets returned to you).

When I sent in my club's tax extension I asked the counter person at USPS which is "better". She said if you have the certified you can follow the tracking online with the number on the receipt. She went on to say that the return receipt is only worthwhile if you don't have a computer or are not computer literate.

Just passing along what she told me after I made the same type of inquiry.

I filled those out and handed it all to the clerk, but she didn't process it.  That's why I was walking out without the green and white certified mail receipt in my hand.  She might have caught her error after I left, but I still wouldn't have the certified receipt for proof or tracking unless she decided to mail it to me.

Probably the only reason I realized I was missing something was that I previously sent the extension form the same way and the green/white certified mail receipt has been sitting next to my computer all week waiting for me to scan it into my computer.

For what it is worth - - -

In three of the last five years, the tracking of our return
ended with an entry that it was leaving the Salt Lake City
Regional Distribution Center. Never got scanned in Ogden nor
as delivered to IRS address. The tracking of this year's
extension ended in an Ogden Distribution Center. No proof of
delivery to IRS via electronic tracking, but the green post
card came back with a faint date received stamp.

In one of the five years, the green post card never came
back. Luckily it was a year where the electronic record
showed delivery.

I choose to pay for certified mail to proof delivery to USPS
and domestic return receipt card to prove receipt by IRS.
Also print out electronic tracking. Never had to prove
filing to IRS yet, but more ammo the better. Small price for
insurance.

I've had to provide proof of filing to IRS several times over the past years. Each time I had filed on time. But they lost it, or something.
Huge waste of time & hours of waiting on hold, etc.

Each time they have accepted any proof I had to offer, even just a receipt for the custom postage amount on the big envelope of taxes, dated the day I mailed the taxes (which was not late). That time I had just mailed it first class. So all I had was a USPS receipt for whatever the first class postage for that big envelope was. But it was dated.

The only way the IRS would accept that proof was via FAX, of all things. So if you need to deal with them, have a fax machine at the ready, on a different phone line so you can fax them while staying on the call. That's apparently the preferred way. But my fax machine wasn't hooked up at the time.

Anyway, they accepted that legitimate proof, and all my problems went away. It did cost me something like 12 hours of failed calls, unanswered calls, and time actually on hold over several weeks though. Would have been half that if I was ready to send a fax that 1st time we talked.

Since then, I always send the taxes certified mail, or at least buy proof of mailing. You def want to have some proof.

Interesting facts:
1) On 02/28/2022, I mailed the extension via certified mail and electronic return receipt. It arrived on 03/09/2022.
2) On 03/07/2022, I mailed the tax return via certified mail and hardcopy return receipt. It arrived on 03/09/2022. I haven't received the hard copy receipt yet, but I tracked it online.
Two different USPS offices but both in the Grand Rapids, MI area.

The cash register receipt has a tracking number on it. I don't think you really need the green copy if you pay for electronic receipt at the time of mailing. I mailed ours on 3/8 and already have gotten an electronic receipt saying it was delivered 3/10. You then have to ask for an electronic receipt on the USPS app or website and give your name and email address. Our return was about 140 pages and cost $16.30 to mail it this way.
