nondividend distribution vs nonqualified dividend vs qualified dividend Hello, There are only 2 fields to enter dividend info. There are 3 different categories on my 1099 so which of the 2 should be combined or should one be ignored? Please help. The "nondividend distribution" is not a dividend so cannot be combined with either of the other two. Without knowing the name of the company issuing the distribution, I cannot tell you the nature of the third distribution. It may be a "return of capital." If the 1099 doesn't identify with more specificity the nature of the distribution, I suggest you go on the website of the issuing company and look under "Investor Relations" or other such terms. The nature of the distribution will be explained somewhere there. Jack I see non-dividend distribution/return of capital, ordinary/non-qualified dividend, and qualified dividend as choices in the system, but there are only two spaces/fields for information to be entered so a third option can't be selected. However, I have all three for one "dividend" payment on my 1099. The company's ticker is ACES. Any input or guidance would be helpful. When you enter the second field, it should open up the third. Enter the third and it should open a fourth, etc. Ira Smilovitz I see non-dividend distribution/return of capital, ordinary/non-qualified dividend, and qualified dividend as choices in the system, but there are only two spaces/fields for information to be entered so a third option can't be selected. The link to its description of distributions is: https://www.alpsfunds.com/products/etf/ACES You should have received an explanation of the breakdown for each quarterly distribution at the time of the distribution. There is a pdf copy to the right of each distribution on the website. Here is the explanation for the 29 Dec 2021 distribution: ALPS Clean Energy ETF ("ACES") Statement Pursuant to Section 19(a) of the Investment Company Act of 1940 On December 29, 2021, the Fund paid a distribution of $0.117650 per share to shareholders of record at the close of business on December 23, 2021. In accordance with generally accepted accounting principles ("GAAP"), the Fund estimates that 2.94% of that distribution is attributable to current fiscal year net investment income and 97.06% is from return of capital. The timing and character of distributions for federal income tax purposes are determined in accordance with income tax regulations which may differ from GAAP. As such, all or a portion of this distribution may be reportable as taxable income on your 2021 federal income tax return. The final tax character of any distribution declared in 2021 will be determined in January 2022 and reported to you on IRS Form 1099-DIV. An investor should read the prospectus carefully and consider ACES's investment objectives, risks, charges & expenses before investing. To obtain a prospectus containing this and other information, please call 1-866-759-5679 or visit www.alpsfunds.com. ALPS Advisors, Inc. is the Investment Adviser. ALPS Portfolio Solutions Distributor, Inc. is the Distributor for ACES Thank you Ira for explaining the fields will open up as the info is entered. I'm so glad it's that simple. I was focused on trying to determine what to enter or combine since I only saw two spaces and couldn't find any answers on the forum or online. I really appreciate this knowledgeable community. Thanks again. Thank you so much for the investor information and being responsive in my time of need. This is very helpful. |
