Certified mail for federal return
Does an electronic return receipt satisfy as proof for timely mailing of the return? Or is the paper return receipt the only one allowed?

Thanks.

I was told by USPS that electronic receipt was fine. They also said it was unlikely that they would be able to obtain an physical signature from the IRS.

USPS does not make IRS rules, so I would not rely on their interpretation. The USPS website still claims that its "certificate of mailing" is valid for IRS purposes when the Tax Court has ruled that it is not. The key piece of evidence that your return was timely mailed is the certified mail receipt you get when you deliver your package to the USPS. The return receipt (green postcard) is an added piece of insurance. More often than not, I get the return card from the IRS with the receipt information stamped on it.
