IRS forms I sent the IRS forms in the mail two weeks ago with signature return. I have not gotten the receipt back. I am wondering if I need to send another copy or aqssume that the return made it? I talked to our pastmaster and sne said that there is no way to trace it; I sent my Tax Return Certified. I just checked the web site above, Keyed the Certified Receipt ID Code and was able to get confirmation of IRS Receipt. FYI. Curtis P Meaux

I talked to our pastmaster and sne said that there is no way to trace it; How exactly did you send the return? "Signature return" isn't the name of any official USPS service. The only proper way to send the return is by Certified Mail. Your certified mail receipt provides proof of timely mailing (regardless of when the envelope is delivered to the IRS). Your certified mail receipt contains a tracking number which you can use to track your envelope. If you sent it Certified Mail - Return Receipt Requested, eventually you will get the green postcard back confirming delivery. Ira Smilovitz, EA
If you can't confirm via the website (like Curtis did), then I would NOT assume it made it. Our club return got lost in the mail two years ago. We were not made aware of it until we got a penalty notice in the mail. We successfully fought it because i had the certified receipt...but it took a lot of phone hours with IRS people from several places to get it straightened out.

If you sent by certified mail you can track it on line and see if it was received.

It has been my experience over the years that a response from the "feds" can take a month or more--so don't worry; if you mailed it by "certified mail, return receipt requested", they got it. And, this year, my State (CA) received our return 3 days before I mailed it! Go figure.

I would be a bit more patient. I sent ours on 2/27 and just received the return receipt today (3/9). Note: I sent it 1st class, certified and return receipt. If you sent it "certified " you can check it's status online. Sent from my iPhone On Mar 14, 2020, at 8:22 PM, Connie Humble via bivio.com <user*27031200001@bivio.com> wrote:
But don't believe everything you see online. I sent ours on Mar 2 - 1st class, certified and return receipt. Estimated delivery date was Mar 5th. The certified tracking online still says "In transit to next facility - dated Mar 8th." The return receipt tracking number now shows "Your item arrived at our USPS facility in DETROIT MI DISTRIBUTION CENTER on March 15, 2020 at 10:48 am. The item is currently in transit to the destination." I'm hoping they're referring to the postcard and not the envelope of tax forms. You can start an inquiry with USPS online. I did that and heard right back that they would look into it. Haven't heard any more than that yet. I do believe that your certified mail receipt is all you would need for the IRS. I agree with Kim's final statement. The green and white form should be stamped with the date you mailed the return and that is the critical date. Once you mail it you are not responsible if it is lost/delayed because that is beyond your control. We always retained the green and white form during the 35 years that I was directed a university payroll office.
