Our club has been around since 2013. We have a Federal
Employer Identification Number (EIN) and our club name has
been filed as a trade name with the state of Colorado.
Each year we renew our trade name with the state, but this
year I'm wondering if we really need to do this. It's only
$5 to renew, but I'm not sure it offers any benefit to our
club. If we don't renew, someone else could start using our
name, but we have a unique EIN, so I don't think that
matters.
I would appreciate the group's thoughts/advice about
renewing the trade name.
Thank you!

Hi,
I suspect the name you are referring to is the name that was used on your club accounts and the name you used when you got the EIN. In that case, you are doing business under the name and you probably need to have it registered.
Beyond that, you might ask the office where you register the name and/or a local attorney. The correct answer will depend on the laws in your particular state. A local attorney would be the best place to get an answer as to how they would apply to you and your situation.
