Transferring Shares
One of our long time members passed away last week. Very
sad for her family and our Club. I read the other posts
about the steps to take. She had a large valuation and we
decided we wanted to transfer shares to her estate as she
has a large valuation and would leave us with sizable
capital gains if we were to sell and write a check to her
estate which is what her family wants. She has a personal
brokerage acccount but that's not part of the estate since
there are 3 beneficiaries named. Can shares be transferred
somehow to the Estate account? Thanks for your help.

Hi Susan,

You'd need to work with the estate executor to open a brokerage account, transfer the shares to that and let them deal with them after that.

I would caution you that you'd want this to be something that could happen pretty quickly once the valuation date and transaction date for closing her account had passed.

Clubs get into all kinds of very complex issues trying to transfer shares to estates when there is a big delay before the transfer can happen.

Thank you. I was hoping that was the outcome.
