Explaining to members how to access their K-1's It may be obvious to most but how do you send send one K-1 from whole PDF of tax return. Thank you, Sent from my HTC ----- Reply message ----- From: "Irina Clements" <irina39@verizon.net> To: <club_cafe@bivio.com> Subject: [club_cafe] Explaining to members how to access their K-1's Date: Sat, Feb 18, 2017 10:11 AM I just skip the whole explaining thing. I PDF each partner's Form K-1 and email to each, along with a copy of IRS K-1 instructions. In this way, I don't have to explain to members, and ensure each receives it.. AND avoids panicked calls on April 15th, regarding getting the form, explaining entry, etc etc etc. (Yes, understand sending the SSN on form through email.) Yes it does take PDF-ing and emailing individual forms. Honestly much less trouble in long run. And it seems more personal to my club members, several of have shared they like it, (and also like the sending of the instructions). Sit down, you're going to have a V-8 moment. <VBG> Open the pdf file and print the return. Then pull the printed K-1 forms from the printed return, scan them individually to a pdf file in your printer/scanner, and e-mail them. Then remember to replace the k-1s into the return. I have managed to help our club members learn to use Bivio Web Site. My club has progressed to be more computer-literate than some clubs it seems. We post monthly treasurer's reports / minutes / partnership agreement on the Web in Files area. Our members have been taught (multiple times!) how to use online tools to develop SSGs, etc. I no longer provide paper copies of any of our reports - members are expected to review them electronically. So for us - them reviewing and printing their own K1s is no big deal. I just post that I have completed the forms, remind them again where to find the documents, and they all (except for maybe 1) get their own K1s. Also, please note that I may be the youngest member - age 66. So, it can be done with enough training and patience. Curtis P. I believe there are downloaded apps for Windows machines that will do the same, but I have on used the built-in Mac (Apple) version. I save the form as a PDF. I use CutePDF. Then I open it, spool to the pages where the individual K-1s are and print just that page, saving it as "MemberLastNameClubNameTaxYearForm K-1" and save to a folder. Then I repeat. I go to next page and print again as PDF. To save time in naming, I go to the just saved file, click on it, and change the name from the first to the one I just saved. (Saves typing). Example First Save <ClementsStreetbeaters2016FormK-1> Second Save Click on <> and change "Clements" to "Jones". Two files now ClementsStreetbeaters2016FormK-1 JonesStreetbeaters2016FormK-1 Third Save and so forth SmithStreetbeaters2016FormK-1 Etc,etc (and yes, be careful you don't click on name and save one member's form K-1 as another's.) Be Well. Irina Sent from my iPad
Linda, You can also open the PDF file of the Tax Return and PRINT single pages (1 for each member) - but, PRINT it as a PDF - that means changing your printer to "CutePDF Writer" or something similar. (Just go to the page of each member's K-1 and print "current page" or use that page number. That will save you having to pull forms from the full tax return and scanning. I too find it's easier to just email the K-1 to each member. No matter what I've tried, my club members will not use our club site (and they're all computer savvy!). I'm ready to threaten to resign, but since everyone else has said they won't do the treasurer job, that would ineluctably lead to disbanding (which I don't want). Yes, it's very easy to electronically send the K-1s from an Apple (Mac) computer. I can't imagine it's very much harder to do so on a Windows computer--you're simply grabbing the K-1 as a pdf file and attaching it to an email. So maybe google "how to attach pdf to email" or ask a knowledgeable PC person for help. Finally, maybe I'm paranoid but I never send anyone's SS# in or attached to an email. I've been told by computer techies that email is very insecure (unless it's highly encrypted), and that one should never transmit sensitive data (e.g., social sec. numbers) via email. Just saying. I agree. One of the values of bivio is that it's a hosted on-line app with the ability to set individual member privileges. A key functionality is allowing members to access reports, club files and their individual Federal and State (some) tax forms. The links and paths for these accesses are simple to understand and use. I don't see how anyone could mess it up if given a 30 second meeting demo or two sentences of instructions in an email. This is life today---- brochures, govt forms, warranty sign-ups, product instruction manuals, etc, etc, everything is on-line. It sounds callous but if someone can't use a computer, the internet and a straight-forward app like bivio to get their own information, they probably shouldn't be in an investment club.
