Todays Rant about MLP's

Good morning,

We try and try to get the word out to your investment clubs to stay away from investing in partnerships like MLP's. Unfortunately, clubs still find out the hard way that they are going to have to hire an accountant to help with their club taxes every year because they've invested in them.

I worked with a club just this morning that had invested in The Blackstone Group L.P. (BX). The L.P. at the end of that company's name is a club that that this is a partnership. They're stuck with the problems now. The best they can do is try and keep them from compounding by selling the investment ASAP.

If you need another reason to discourage your club from falling prey to the sales pitches that are rampant about MLP's, have them read this article:

The MLP Myth Blown To Smithereens

As always, please contact us at support@bivio.com if you have any questions whether something you are about to invest in is a partnership. We're so much happier when we can help you avoid having an issue than we are when we have to tell you you're stuck in the middle of one.

Thanks, Laurie. I've seen a couple of cases of this lately also.

Thanks for the heads up Laurie. Our club has an investment in LINE. This is another stock that has posed issues for Investment clubs as it issues a 1099 at the end of the year, and not in a very timely manner at that. It would be great if there were a list of tickers that can cause an extra hassle for clubs. Not so much as to tell would be investors to stay away, but more so to educate them on what they are getting into.

Hi,

You're in luck. We do have such a list that includes many of the common problem tickers. You can find a link to it on our help page:

Before You Invest

As you can see. LINN is on this list. They do not issue 1099's, they issue K-1's. Any company that issues a K-1 at tax time will be a problem.

Here are some other ways to tell if a company will be a problem:

Right! K-1 and not 1099. I realized my mistake right after I hit send.

Happy holidays to you and your family!

No problem. I just like to clarify because all of these IRS form codes can get confusing.
