Ebay and Paypal
Hi,

Our club owns 100 shares of eBay (and now, 100 shares of Paypal). It seems that the spinoff transaction did not get imported from our brokerage account (at Scottrade).

So, how do I enter the spinoff manually?

Thanks!

Hi,

Scottrade does not provide reorganization information in the data file they provide us so you need to enter them manually or contact us at support@bivio.com and we can enter them for you.

You can enter a spinoff yourself using the spinoff button you'll find on the Accounting>Investments page. In this case, you received 1 PYPL share for each EBAY share you owned on 7/8/2015. The spinoff would be entered on 7/20/2015, the first day PYPL was traded. Any fractional shares would be sold for a cash in lieu amount. Sometimes this doesn't come through for a week or more after the spinoff.

The complication when entering a spinoff is determining how the cost basis of your original EBAY shares is split between the two types of shares you'll own after the spinoff. There are several acceptable ways to determine this.

Companies provide a form 8937 when they have a spinoff which will specify how much of the original basis stays with the parent shares. Most brokers seem to go along with these amounts. Unfortunately, companies have 45 days to post this, so in the interim, you'll have to make an educated guess on what the "remaining basis percentage" amount will be.

We provide you one way to determine it on the form. You can also see what your broker shows as cost basis of your EBAY and PYPL shares after the spinoff and match that.

If you want us to help you match your brokers numbers, send us a brokers report that shows the cost basis of EACH LOT of your PYPL and EBAY shares after the split and we can help you make the entries you need.

Send it to support@bivio.com, not to this Club Cafe discussion list.

Hope that helps.

Hi Laurie,

Thank you for your help. I entered the spin-off manually and used the cost basis provided by Scottrade (on their unrecognized gain/loss report).

Thanks again,

Dave

That is good.

You can confirm that you have entered it correctly by comparing the same unrealized gain/loss report for EBAY and PYPL to the bivio Investment Lot Cost Basis report you can find on the Accounting>Reports page.
