I'm a club treasurer so I appreciate Laurie's suggesion that you thank your club's treasurer.

Here's a further suggestion: let's all thank Laurie for all the hard work she does and did this tax season. She has answered all my pleas for help almost instanteously: at one point I sent her an email on a weekend, expecting a reply the following week. I got a response that same weekend! Her solutions for problems have all been sensible and the information provided accurate and up-to-date. Without her help, our club tax return would have been inaccurate and greatly delayed.

Many thanks, Laurie!

I agree Andy. Thank you Laurie for all you do for us. I, too, have sent requests for help at odd hours and received an almost immediate, extremely helpful reply. Laurie, thank you for your knowledge and your willingness to share and help.

Thank you Andy! I really appreciate that kind thoughts.

I can confirm that everyone owes a great deal of thanks to their treasurers for making sure their investment club taxes were done correctly.

If your club is keeping things simple, it is not a big job at all.

But for any clubs whose treasurers had to handle DRIP investing sales, REIT's or MLP's, you should know that your treasurer had to put in extra hours to get your taxes done correctly. Another treasurer gift idea would be to not do any of those types of investing. Make sure your club is only buying round lots of common stock.

Many of the cost basis matching issues that some treasurers wait until tax season to address can also be addressed during the year.

A third idea for a treasurer gift would be to commit to help your treasurer check the cost basis details (purchase date, number of shares and cost basis per lot) when you have a sale.

It's easy to do by comparing a bivio capital gains report to a broker "Realized gain/loss" or "Closed tax lot" report.

That way if there are differences between bivio and your broker, you can get help to get them corrected during the year when there is lots of time to work on them.

You don't really learn to invest unless you invest real money. That brings real tax consequences with it. Taxes bring anxiety but it doesn't have to be that way.

Make sure your club understands how to keep your club operations as simple as possible and you'll always have someone in your club who is glad to take on the club treasurers job!

I agree.  I have been amazed at her willingness to address clubs' needs on weekends as well as during the week.  And, not just tax season.  She has tirelessly worked to assist us with even mundane questions.  Laurie has either a great memory or a wonderful tickler system; as soon as the crunch of the tax season ended, she got back to me about regular club issues.  She has been able, and willing, to do these things for a long time.  So, Thank you, Laurie!

Laurie,

I want to add my thanks for the support you obviously have been giving for club treasurers. I am new to the treasurer position in a new club, so have not had occasion to ask any hard questions. Maybe next year!

I have been our club treasurer since 1997. I took the position with the understanding that we buy software to make my job easier. We tried a few different options. Remember NAIC had accounting software years ago? It was a nightmare at tax time and I needed my two CPA parents to help me every year! And along came Bivio.

So, I have to give a big awesome shout-out to BIVIO. Your service has made my job so easy and actually fun! I also take a guilty pleasure in the fact that my club members think my job is more difficult than it is. :-) For me, that's a perfect gift.

Thanks, Kimberly

Thank you everyone.

I really admire all of you for being in clubs and spending the time to learn more about investing and sharing what you learn with your families and friends.

We are all required now to understand how to provide for our own futures. Learning to invest wisely is one part of that.

Those who don't make the effort to learn about it, are at the mercy of people whose priority is really to make money for themselves, not for you.

While I'm sure there are certainly a lot of conscientious investment advisers out there, you won't even know how to find them unless you've spent some time to learn the questions to ask them. Spending a little time participating in an investment club each month is a great way to make progress in accumulating that wisdom.
