Moving Forward by Looking Back

Good morning everyone,

There are a lot of articles today about motivation and setting goals. It's something we all focus on as we move into a new year and what always feels like a new start.

But along with setting goals for the future, I think it's important to look back and appreciate all you have accomplished in 2014. It is sometimes overwhelming to think about how far you have to go. Looking at how far you've come in a year helps you realize how much you really can accomplish.

So I hope all of you who have been members of investment clubs in 2014 congratulate yourselves. You made a commitment to learn more about investing and you spent time regularly working on that during the past year. As this quote sums up, that is what it takes:

"Discipline is choosing between what you want now and what you want most."

Motivation is fleeting. It's what got you to start or join an investment club in the first place. But discipline is what makes you successful. It's what has kept you attending meetings every month despite all of the other demands on your time and attention. It's why you now know more about investing than you did at the start of 2014.

Pat yourselves on the back! Congratulations on a successful year of taking positive steps in the right direction.

Laurie, Thank you for these words of encouragement.  Sometimes when things don't always go in the direction you wish or expected, there is a tendency to get a tad down.  2014 was a good year in many ways.  So, while there were some losses, some financial and especially some personal, things overall were great in 2014.  It is good to remember that.  (I also am going to apply your "discipline" quote to help me get motivated again on my weight loss journey.)

Have a Very Happy 2015!

Roy
