What Characteristics Do You Look For In A New Member?
Hi Everyone,

I thought it would be interesting to tap into some of your investment club experiences to develop
some more information for those thinking of starting an investment club. How would you answer this question?

What characteristics do you think are valuable for a potential member of an investment club to have?

I'd appreciate any thoughts that you'd like to share.

An enthusiastic desire to learn about investing and a "20%" team player - one who expects to give as much as they get.

It's hard to put this one into a precise characteristic, but we look for someone who matches the "vibe" of our group. We are very relaxed. As the years go by, we're finding ourselves busy with family and kids and so someone who wants a strict "this is what we're going to cover/do at the meeting" process just won't be happy. However, if they are chill and want to make some new friends while learning about stocks and catching up on kids/grandkids/dogs/vacation stories, then we'll be great together. So I guess "philosophy match" would be what we're looking for in a new member.

Cheers, Kimberly

An interest in fundamental analysis. Unlike my technical analysis friend whose motto is "Never judge a stock by the company it keeps."

Personally, I look for an adult (in both age and
temperament) human being (no corporations, partnerships,
trusts or other legal entities) who understands that
becoming a successful investor requires a certain amount of
money, time, effort and knowledge, and who is willing to
supply these resources in a group environment.
Well said William!

We look for curiosity about investing, and perhaps a bit of
fear. Most of our
(new) members are new to investing, with responsibility for
their own
financial future thrust upon them by death of a spouse,
divorce, retirement,
etc. We ask them to attend two meetings and decide if they
"fit" our style.
We hold workshops, teach them what they need to know, and
gradually work them into full participation.
