crime insurance

Our club has an insurance policy to cover any fraud or theft by the officers.  It is getting very expensive given the increasing size of our portfolio.  Do other clubs carry this kind of insurance and what insurance companies do you use?

Dear Linda,

My club of 20 years has never carried this insurance. We trust our members, naively perhaps, but it has worked for us!

We implanted an RFID chip into our treasurer.  Much cheaper. :P

Never had insurance! We trust people in club. We only have 7 members and we are close friends. If it was a large club and we did not know each other so well, we would probably have insurance.

Good idea!

Actually, I've been the treasurer of our group for 15 years and NO ONE is interested in double-checking my work. I even give them stories now and again about how treasurers rip off clubs. They trust me.

But, to be transparent, they have the passwords and access for Bivio and our trading account. If they suspect any funny business, they can see everything. Of course, not one of them has used the login.

Maybe the RFID chip would be easier.

All of the members of a club are responsible for the treasurers actions. So if a club does not have a system of regular confirmation that the clubs records are accurate, I think it would be hard for them to have recourse if the treasurer did do something inappropriate with the club accounts.

Some sort of checks and balances are important internal controls for any kind of business entity.

An RFID chip is a creative idea......

Our club is small and i have been the treasurer since the beginning and we have never had insurance. Like another club we are small only 6 of us. We did have an incidence with the co treasurer that wanted out and requested a check without our knowledge. We stopped her from getting the money because all mailings came to my address. This group, we are all good friends and we trust one another.

@ Gloria - did your treasurer sell any stock in order to get a check?

No we had money in the account. It was a small amount. She is no longer a member to say the least.

Hi Kimberly,

When you say that no one has used the login, is there a way to see if people have access the Bivio and trading account?

Thanks.

I'm not exactly sure. My group has just told me they haven't used it. Makes me wonder, though if Bivio and our brokerage offers information about logins (and what IP they came from) like Google. I've emailed TD Ameritrade about the question. Can you tell us about Bivio?

In our club, each member has access to bivio account and looks at it regularly. We put in some educational information and show reports on bivio in meetings. It is convenient for members to use the bivio research tools.
