Un-accounted for deposit

Un-accounted for deposit We do our monthly investments using electronic funds transfer into our club checking account at Comerica bank. We received a deposit in mid April for $130.76 that we can't tie to any partner. We've asked the bank to research it. They can't find any information on the deposit but we can order an image of the check for $7.50, which we won't do. We're keeping the money in the checking account so that it's there when the bank finally figures out who the money belongs to. What else should we be doing? Changing banks? They don't sound very customer friendly.Laurie Frederiksen

It sounds as though it may be worth the $7.50 to find out since you have already polled your partners and still have no answer to its source. It also sounds as though you might find a better bank with which to work or, as Laurie suggests, deposit funds directly with your broker and bypass the bank entirely. I would request the copy and then ask the bank to reverse the charge if it came from some source other than one of your partners. Vanguard doesn't allow us to do that.

We did; nobody claimed it.

Are you saying that if you sent them a check made out to Vanguard with your club account number in the memo field, or endorsed on the back "Deposit to Account number xxxx" they wouldn't deposit it in your club account? It's been a couple years since we last checked so I don't recall what the issue was any more. I'll have to check again.
