Failures
Investing is a long term journey into uncharted territory for most of us. Like other long term journeys, Investing can lead to experiences with failures. Failures can be disheartening. Your Investment club can lose focus on your long term goals and members can become discouraged. Does your club need some motivation? I came across two writings recently about failure that I found particularly motivating to think about.

"A winner is just a loser who tried one more time"

And this National Geographic Article about Failures:

Famous Failures

Which contained this quote at the end:

"If you take away uncertainty, you take away motivation. Wanting to exceed your grasp is the nature of the human condition. There's no magic to getting where we already know we can get."

So go to your next investment club meeting excited about what you can learn from the investment choices you made that didn't pan out. Don't be discouraged. Pat yourselves on the back and enjoy knowing you have gotten better at investing because you made an attempt to try. Learning new things is a good feeling. It helps you feel less vulnerable and more in control. As Peter Athans is also quoted in the article referenced above:

"Failure gives you a chance to refine your approach. You're taking risks more and more intelligently."

Enjoy the journey. Share the failures with your friends. It helps put them in perspective and helps you stay the course.

Dear Laurie,
You remind me of the Energizer Bunny who just won't quit. Day after day, week after week, you make every effort to inspire and motivate and challenge this community. And seldom do I see kudos sent your way.
So today, let me be the FIRST to say thank you for all you do. You've become a true asset to bivio. We're glad you're here.
Sincerely,
Lynn Ostrem

Laurie, Thank you for sending these out.  These sentiments help put our failures into perspective.

Laurie - These are great examples and there are many more from all phases of life. Investing just isn't that different from any other endeavour worth doing. Here are some of my favorite quotes about failure:

I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work.
Thomas Edison

Failure is the condiment that gives success its flavor
Truman Capote

Success is the ability to go from failure to failure without losing your enthusiasm
Winston Churchill

Failures are finger posts on the road to achievement
C.S. Lewis

And there are equally great quotes on some of the lessons we see daily on this web site about successful investing:

I made my money by selling too soon
Bernard Baruch

Opportunities are seldom labeled
John A. Shedd

No man is wise enough by himself
Titus Maccius Plautus

Good things happen to those who hustle
Chuck Noll

This is a great site - and not just for investing, but for sharing.

Thanks, Mark.  I was aware of only Edison's and Noll's statements.  These are great.
