Securities and Exchange Commission Historical Website
I just found a reference to this and thought those of you who are history buffs, investing buffs or just curious about the history of financial regulation of the stock markets might also find this site interesting:

Securities and Exchange Commission Historical Society

The site has a fascinating timeline that overlays significant events in history with the significant changes in the regulation of financial markets. It begins in the 1930's with the Depression and the first establishment of a set of uniform state securities laws and continues through this decade and the establishment of securities regulations being currently debated such as the Dodd Frank Act and the Volcker Rule.

It gives you some easy to digest perspective on why things are the way they are in the world of finance in the US.
