Why you should wait for your 1099 - end of year txns Every year Laurie, I and several others counsel club treasurers to
wait for their 1099s to arrive before completing their tax returns.
Here's a personal anecdote to reinforce that advice. I prepared a
preliminary copy of my club's 1065 and anticipated distributing the K-1s at
our meeting tomorrow if TDAmeritrade released our 1099 in time. Late
this evening I logged into the TDA site and found our 1099. I quickly
printed it off and set about to compare the numbers with those generated by
bivio.
The very first number I checked (dividends) was different - TDA had
significantly more dividends than we had recorded in bivio. How could this be? I
religiously check bivio's autosync downloads against our broker account.
Comparing TDA's detailed dividend report to bivio's listing in the tax
interview, I noticed that bivio had only recorded three quarterly dividends from
Becton Dickinson (BDX). The Q4 dividend (which was payable on 12/30/11) wasn't
credited to our TDA account until 1/3/12 and picked up by bivio on the same
date. I had overlooked that on the January TDA account statement (but not on the
online daily transaction record) the transaction was correctly identified as
being payable in 2011.
A quick edit to the dividend transaction in bivio and a regeneration
of the tax return and all was right with the world. (at least this small part of
it)
