Qualified dividends
You only need to refer table 8-1 if the stock doesn't trade in the US or trades only on the "Pink Sheets".

Any dividend paid by a foreign corporation whose stock trades on a major US exchange (NYSE, NASDAQ National Market, AMEX, Boston, Chicago, Cincinnati, Pacific, Philadelphia) and whose dividends would be qualified if the corporation were a domestic corporation, is a qualified dividend for income tax purposes.

Just a quick FYI: Based upon various tax treaties the US has with other countries, not all foreign countries "qualify". IRS Publication 17 includes a list of qualified countries respect to foreign dividends. Look for table 8.1: http://www.irs.gov/publications/p17/ch08.html#en_US_2011_publink1000171592

Our club has 3 foreign stocks.  How do I find out if the

Hi Linda,

Yes.  Your 1099 will at least indicate that the companies that paid them were Qualifying companies.  That is the information that is used to complete the Qualified question in the tax interview.

bivio will then also run the final holding period check which is needed to make the final determination of qualified/non-qualified status.
