Has anybody else out there found this? For the past several years, and it's happening again this year, I'm an investing genius during March and February. My portfolio is way up.

Of course, who wants to sell then?

Things always do seem to fall back to earth when it gets closer to summer.

Not a scientific observation by any means but it is interesting to me to think about.

There is an old saying to "Sell it in May and go away"

Anybody else notice this?

I have heard that saying before and it might be true for those who hold their stocks for weeks or a few months.  I took a quick look at the 6 year chart of all of my stocks and came to the conclusion that it is bad advice.  Yes, some stocks do fall or trade sideways during the summer months but I see plenty of stocks that had substancial gains through the summer months.  I would of missed out on some big gains.  The ones that fall rebound anyway.  As long as you feel that the company is a good investment then don't sell.

I agree with you John and in general, that's what I do.

However, I do think that it is important to think about the psychological issues associated with being an investor.

Everyone always talks about having trouble knowing when to sell. A lot of us tend to feel pressure when things are down and sell then.

When the market is pretty high, as it is now, might be a better time to make a review of your portfolio. If some of your companies are way higher than you expected they would go, it might be a good time to lock in some profits or add some trailing stop loss orders.

Selling is just as important to being a successful investor as buying good stocks is.

It's just good for us to all think about that at least as often as we think about what new stocks to purchase.
